Beta Release Notice: PowerTools 3.0 is currently in beta. While we’ve thoroughly tested this release, you may encounter minor bugs as we finalize the platform. We’re committed to addressing any issues quickly through regular updates. Your feedback during this beta period is invaluable in helping us deliver the polished final release.

Completely Rebuilt from the Ground Up
We’ve rewritten the entire PowerTools codebase from scratch, eliminating years of technical debt accumulated during our rapid growth. This isn’t just an update; it’s a complete reimagining of how PowerTools works under the hood.

Focused Feature Set for Professional Services
Based on extensive feedback from our core user base in professional services, we’ve streamlined PowerTools to focus on the features that matter most for business presentations:
Strategic Feature Changes:
- Removed animation and transition features: Including animation painters, timing tools, and transition effects. Our research shows these features aren’t commonly used in professional services environments, where clean, static presentations are the standard
- Temporarily removed Insert Icons feature: Based on feedback, we found users preferred using native PowerPoint icons with custom backgrounds. We’ve added the Smart Icon Backgrounds feature to support this workflow instead
- Retired additional rarely-used features: We’ve removed a number of other features that less than 5% of users actively utilized to make the more used features more performant
- Eliminated performance-impacting background features: Removed features that ran passively and impacted performance, even when not in active use
This focused approach means PowerTools 3.0 is optimized for creating professional business presentations efficiently, without the overhead of features designed for niche use cases. By removing these underutilized features, we’ve achieved our 50% performance improvement while making the interface cleaner and more intuitive.
The Road Ahead: PowerTools Platform Evolution
Introducing Platform-Specific Versions
PowerTools 3.0 sets the stage for an exciting evolution. We’re branching PowerTools into dedicated versions for Windows and Mac, each optimized for its platform:
PowerTools for Windows (Coming Soon)
- Built on modern VSTO technology with C# codebase
- Unlocks powerful new features previously impossible with VBA
- Enhanced enterprise deployment and management capabilities
- During transition, VSTO features will complement the VBA add-in
PowerTools for Mac
- Will continue leveraging VBA platform (the standard for Mac add-ins)
- Becomes a separate, Mac-optimized product when Windows VSTO version is complete

Installation & Support

Installation is seamless with no breaking changes. Simply follow the update instructions in our PowerTools documentation.
Important: Security Warnings During Beta Installation
As a beta release, PowerTools 3.0 has not yet completed the code signing process for Windows and Mac. This means you may encounter security warnings during installation:
What to Expect:
- Windows: You may see a SmartScreen warning or “Unknown Publisher” message when running the .exe installer
- Mac: You may see a message that the installer “cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”
Your Security is Our Priority:
- PowerTools 3.0 has undergone a comprehensive security audit
- The software meets our stringent security standards
- These warnings appear only because the beta hasn’t completed the formal code signing process yet
- The final release will be fully signed and these warnings will not appear

For Enterprise Customers
PowerTools 3.0 maintains full compatibility with your existing deployments while preparing your organization for enhanced enterprise features in the upcoming VSTO release. IT administrators should note the temporary security warnings during beta installation and may need to adjust deployment policies accordingly.
